South Beach, 1974-1990: Photographs of a Jewish Community

Photography, Art Show

South Beach, 1974-1990: Photographs of a Jewish Community explores South Beach the way it was. During the 1970s and 1980s, highlighted photographers Gay Block, Gary Monroe, Richard Nagler, David Scheinbaum, and Andy Sweet each undertook long-term documentation projects of South Beach, before the neighborhood transformed into todayís world famous tourist and nightlife destination. HistoryMiami Museum will display selections from each of their projects, offering personal portraits of the neighborhood in an era when South Beach was predominantly an elderly Jewish community. In addition to photography, the exhibition will also feature Gay Blockís documentary A Bie Gesunt (As Long As Youíre Well). This is a project of the museumís Center for Photography. Sponsors include the Knight Foundation and Susannah and John Shubin.
